Essential Oils for Diffuser Guide Australia: Oils, Drops, Recipes & Safety

Which Essential Oils Are Best for a Diffuser?

The best essential oils for a diffuser are pure, free-flowing oils with a clear aroma, such as sweet orange, lemon, lavender, eucalyptus, cedarwood and frankincense. Choosing the right essential oils for diffuser use comes down to the mood you want in the room and how strong you like the scent.

  • Fresh and bright: Sweet Orange, Lemon, Bergamot and Lemon Myrtle give a clean, uplifting citrus aroma for kitchens and living areas.
  • Soft and floral: Lavender, Geranium and Roman Chamomile give a gentle, rounded aroma for bedrooms and quiet evenings.
  • Warm and grounding: Cedarwood, Frankincense and Sandalwood give a woody, steady aroma that suits cooler months and reading corners.

Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis) is cold-pressed from the fruit peel and is one of the easiest oils to diffuse on its own. Lemon myrtle (Backhousia citriodora) is steam distilled from the leaves of a native Australian tree and brings a sharp, lemony freshness. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is steam distilled from the flowering tops and pairs with almost every citrus and wood oil.

What Type of Essential Oils for Diffuser Use Is Best?

The best type of essential oils for diffuser use is a 100% pure, undiluted essential oil, because it disperses cleanly and gives a true botanical aroma. Pure oils suit both water-based ultrasonic diffusers and waterless nebulising diffusers.

Avoid adding roll-on blends or any oil already diluted in a carrier oil to a diffuser, as the carrier can coat the ultrasonic plate and stop it misting properly. Very thick oils such as vetiver, patchouli and sandalwood are best mixed with thinner oils before use, especially in nebulising diffusers, which can clog. Synthetic fragrance oils are a different product, so check your diffuser manual before using them.

What Are Some Good Essential Oil Blend Recipes for Your Diffuser?

Good essential oil blend recipes for your diffuser combine a bright top note, a softer middle note and a grounding base note, kept to 3 to 5 drops per 100 mL of water. Each recipe below makes 5 drops for a 100 mL tank, so double it for 200 mL.

  • Evening Wind-Down: 2 drops Lavender, 2 drops Sweet Orange, 1 drop Cedarwood for a soft, woody evening aroma.
  • Fresh Morning: 2 drops Lemon, 2 drops Rosemary, 1 drop Cedarwood for a clean, green start to the day.
  • Warm and Cosy: 2 drops Sweet Orange, 2 drops Frankincense, 1 drop Clove for a spiced, resinous aroma in cooler weather.

These recipes follow the same top, middle and base structure explained in our essential oil blend guide, which covers the 30/50/20 rule in detail. If you would rather skip the measuring, Sweet Dreams, Stress Relief and Five Thieves are ready-made 10 mL blends you can add straight to the tank.

How Many Drops of Essential Oil per Diffuser Tank Size?

You need 3 to 5 drops of essential oil per 100 mL of water in a standard ultrasonic diffuser, so a 300 mL tank takes 9 to 15 drops. Start at the lower end and add more next time if the aroma is too light.

Tank Size Starting Drops Maximum Drops
100 mL 3 drops 5 drops
200 mL 6 drops 10 drops
300 mL 9 drops 15 drops
400 mL 12 drops 20 drops
500 mL 15 drops 25 drops

Use fewer drops in small, closed rooms such as bathrooms, and with strong oils like peppermint, eucalyptus and clove, where 1 or 2 drops is often enough. Waterless nebulising diffusers work differently, so follow the manufacturer's instructions rather than the water-based table above.

How Long Should You Run an Essential Oil Diffuser?

You should run an essential oil diffuser for about 30 minutes at a time, and no longer than 60 minutes, then switch it off for 30 to 60 minutes before diffusing again. This on-and-off pattern follows the intermittent diffusion guidance published by the Tisserand Institute.

Running a diffuser all night or all day is not recommended. Continuous diffusion can overwhelm the room, and your nose also stops noticing a scent after a while, so more time rarely means more aroma. If your diffuser has an intermittent or timer setting, use it, particularly in bedrooms.

Which Essential Oils Are Safe to Diffuse at Home?

Most pure essential oils, including sweet orange, lemon, lavender, cedarwood and frankincense, are safe to diffuse at home in a well-ventilated room for short, intermittent sessions. Extra care is needed around babies, young children, pregnant women and pets.

Keep strong oils such as eucalyptus and peppermint out of rooms where babies and young children sleep, and read our guide on whether essential oils are safe for babies before diffusing near little ones. Cats are especially sensitive to many essential oils, so see our guide on whether essential oils are safe for cats, and always leave a door open so pets can move away from the aroma.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or anyone in the home has a medical condition, check with a qualified healthcare professional before diffusing. Essential oils are for external use only and must never be swallowed. In case of accidental ingestion, contact the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26.
