What is the scent profile of Floral Grain?

The opening is fresh with a mix of blackcurrant and whiffs of redcurrant combining with a rose impression — a bright and cheery rose, not one of the heavy and dark varieties, with touches of a Damascene specimen. The violet and greens play their roles in creating the quite convincing poppy fantasy note, and the grains make it more grounded. The barley and bran note sits at the bottom of this fragrance and gives it a warm, comforting undertone. Originally launched in 2018 as part of Jo Malone London's English Fields Collection, and later introduced into the main collection in 2019, the blend of grains and floral aromas gives an illusory picture of English wheat fields through which the red poppy flowers bloom. Poppy was a very important ingredient for the collection as it is so quintessentially British, symbolic to this country and they always appear in English fields. This living landscape fragrance represents Jo Malone London's signature ability to evoke place through scent.

Longevity & Projection

  • Longevity: On most skin types, Jo Malone Poppy & Barley lasts between 4 and 6 hours, though some reviewers report 7–12 hours. Our roll-on formulation anchors to skin for enhanced wear.
  • Projection: This sits on your skin and doesn't project at all — the projection is elegant, creating a personal scent bubble that invites people in rather than pushing them away.
  • Best Season: Spring and Summer
  • Best Occasion: Everyday wear, office-safe

Fragrance Profile & Comparison

What Makes Jo Malone Poppy & Barley a Unique Floral Fragrance?

Jo Malone Poppy & Barley stands apart in the floral category because poppies don't have a specific scent, so perfumer Mathilde Bijaoui created an accord of green notes and red rose to express the colours and vivacity of poppy fields. Barley has a cocooning, cotton-soft texture and nurturing warmth that wraps around the vibrant floral heart. This juxtaposition of bright, fleeting florals against grounded cereal notes creates an olfactory landscape rarely explored in modern perfumery.

What Are the Scent Notes in Jo Malone Poppy & Barley?

What Is the Scent Journey of Jo Malone Poppy & Barley?

The initial floral bouquet is zipped up and coloured with the minty, fruity, tangy character of blackcurrant, and throughout the life of the fragrance, the floral bouquet never fades, but at about ten minutes the flowers are enfolded and wrapped in evolving layers of green barley stalks, grains and the yeasty warmth of barley malt and bran. Created by perfumer Mathilde Bijaoui of MANE, this 2019 release from Jo Malone London's English Fields Collection reimagines the British countryside through olfactory abstraction rather than literal representation. To convey the bright red colours of poppy, the flower of sleep, remembrance and resurrection, the perfumer uses facets of deep red rose, spicy carnation and green leaves.

How Does Floral Grain Compare to Jo Malone Poppy & Barley?

Floral Grain captures the aromatic DNA of Jo Malone Poppy & Barley by mirroring the juicy blackcurrant opening, the soft violet and powdery heart, and the distinctive barley-bran base. Our EDP concentration at 20–30% perfume oil offers enhanced longevity compared to Jo Malone's cologne formulation, allowing the grain accord and white musk to linger on skin for extended wear. We honour the same clean, cottony aesthetic while providing greater staying power for Australian climates.

Who Is Jo Malone Poppy & Barley For?

Jo Malone Poppy & Barley is perfect for everyday wear, office-safe, and appeals to those who want a clean, feminine floral fragrance for daily basis. It evokes relaxed outdoor weekends in a bottle — soft rose and soft blackcurrant jam with a warm, comforting undertone. This is for the wearer who values subtlety over projection, intimacy over volume.

What Fragrances Is Jo Malone Poppy & Barley Frequently Compared To?

Jo Malone Poppy & Barley is recommended to be layered with Jo Malone Scarlet Poppy and Myrrh and Tonka. Reviewers also note similarities to Jo Malone Blackberry & Bay for its fruity-clean character, and Jo Malone Red Roses for the soft floral heart. For those exploring beyond the Jo Malone line, some find it reminiscent of Glossier You on skin but sweeter.

How to Wear Floral Grain

  • Pulse Points: Apply the roll-on to inner wrists, behind the ears, the base of the throat, and the inside of elbows. These warm spots activate and project the fragrance throughout the day.
  • Layering Tip: Layer Floral Grain with MUSC ARDENT for a deeper, warmer interpretation, or pair with Red Roses to amplify the floral heart while maintaining the clean, cottony dry-down.
  • Seasonal Wear: A masterpiece for Spring and Summer, where the floral notes thrive in the heat, though the cocooning barley warmth makes it lovely for transitional autumn days.
  • Longevity Tip: Apply to moisturised skin for maximum longevity. The Fractionated Coconut Oil base adheres to hydrated skin significantly better than dry skin.

  • How similar do your botanical impressions actually smell to the designer originals?

Our fragrances are engineered to be a 95–98% match to their designer inspirations. We use advanced Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) technology to analyze the molecular structure of the original perfume oils. While a trained nose might detect a subtle difference in the opening, the dry-down is virtually indistinguishable.

  • Will people be able to tell I am wearing an alternative?

It is highly unlikely. The sillage and projection of our artisanal homages are designed to mirror the luxury versions perfectly. Unless someone is a professional perfumer analyzing the scent side-by-side, no one will know the difference.

  • Why are your perfumes so affordable if the quality is the same?

When you buy a luxury brand, up to 80% of what you pay goes toward celebrity endorsements and marketing. We eliminate this 'Brand Tax.' We use the same high-quality ingredients but package them in minimalist bottles. You pay for the scent, not the logo.

  • Do your botanical impressions last as long as the real thing?

Yes, and often longer. Many designer fragrances are sold as Eau de Toilette. We formulate our oil-based expressions as Eau de Parfum (EDP) or Extrait de Parfum, containing a higher concentration of fragrance oil (20–30%), ensuring the scent lasts for 6+ hours.
