What is the scent profile of Earthy Rose?
Earthy Rose captures the perfect rose, one single perfect flower, from the softest, dew-covered petals down to the dirt still clinging to the roots. In the opening thirty minutes, the rose is the star of the show all the way through, with the other notes complimenting it wonderfully — highlighting it in a way; sometimes you get a hint of tart red wine, other times some sweet honey, but always smelling strongly of roses. After one to three hours, the deep, dark, wine-like red rose comes through in full force — stunningly beautiful, swoonworthy and seductive, underscored by something slightly earthy and animalic. The dry-down from three hours onward reveals moderate sillage projecting to about arm's length for the first two hours before softening into a skin scent; the dry-down reveals a sweet, powdery rose that feels intimate and non-offensive. When Frédéric Malle launched Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle in 2000, it was a novel idea for the perfumer's name to be featured on the bottle; the Paris-based niche fragrance company has built its sought-after reputation on a succession of high-quality, classic releases created by the world's top perfumers, and Une Rose EDP is one of these classics.

What Makes Frederic Malle Une Rose a Unique Floral Woody Fragrance?
Frederic Malle Une Rose is technically brilliant: perfumer Edouard Fléchier has plucked a rose that's earthy-humid and elegant at the same time. It's a standout in a category where there's no shortage of competition, distinguished by its use of Turkish rose absolute — a costly extract whose production is an expensive process, hence its use only in the finest perfumes. What sets this fragrance apart is perfumer Edouard Fléchier's truffle accord — dark, woody and animal notes originally destined for masculine perfumery, married paradoxically to the feminine scent par excellence: the rose.
What Are the Scent Notes in Frederic Malle Une Rose?
- Top Notes: Rose, Honey, Wine Lees, Raspberry, Pink Pepper, Coriander, Juniper
- Middle Notes: Turkish Rose, Geranium, Truffle, Violet, Saffron, Orris
- Base Notes: Musk, Patchouli, Vetiver, Castoreum, Moss, Cedar, Sandalwood, Vanilla
Fragrance Family: Floral-Woody
What Is the Scent Journey of Frederic Malle Une Rose?
Frederic Malle Une Rose starts with a bright, fresh burst of "happy" rose, a little geranium for freshness and a tinge of green, a little citrus — but soon it starts to develop into UNE ROSE, no wallflower. The Turkish rose is prominent throughout the stages of the fragrance, but its character morphs as other notes come into play; at times there's a slight sweetness to it, but mostly it's dramatic and uncompromising. While many rose fragrances peter out with blandness, Une Rose is increasingly intriguing as it progresses to its dry-down; the base notes of castoreum and vetiver work well together to complement the earthiness of the truffle accord, which emphasises the dark aspect of the rose. Perfumer Fléchier used a high vacuum, low temperature distillation process to create this heady, liqueur-like rose, and a Quest molecule called Karanal to give the woody, ambery notes. How Does Earthy Rose Compare to Frederic Malle Une Rose?
Earthy Rose captures the aromatic DNA of Frederic Malle Une Rose: the wine-soaked rose heart, the truffle-tinged earthiness, and the powdery-woody dry-down. Our impression honours the dark crimson complexity and elegant dirtiness of the original, replicating the Turkish rose absolute intensity and the geranium-vetiver greenness. We formulate at EDP concentration to deliver the same opulent longevity. While no impression can replicate the exact molecular structure of a niche masterpiece, Earthy Rose offers Australian fragrance lovers an accessible entry to this iconic scent story.
Who Is Frederic Malle Une Rose For?
Frederic Malle Une Rose is a top choice for rose perfume aficionados — sophisticated and luxurious, though those who are new to rose perfumes might find it a bit bolder than they're used to. It will appeal to anyone who values craftsmanship at its best. This is for the wearer who wants their rose real, uncompromising, and complete — "A ROSE COMPLETE WITH ITS ROOTS" as the original sample cards declared. It feels perfectly suited to a confident, mature woman who knows what she wants, though it's equally striking on anyone drawn to gothic elegance.
What Fragrances Is Frederic Malle Une Rose Frequently Compared To?
Frederic Malle Une Rose is frequently compared to Armani Privé Cuir Majesté, Tom Ford Noir de Noir, Amouage Lyric Man, and Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady. Reviewers also mention Serge Lutens La Fille de Berlin, Serge Lutens Sa Majesté La Rose, Diptyque L'Ombre Dans L'Eau, and Rose & Cuir as fragrances in the same rose-centric conversation. For purelyBlack wearers, Musc Ardent (our Musc Ravageur impression) shares the same house DNA and opulent intensity.

How to Wear Earthy Rose
- Pulse Points: Apply the roll-on to inner wrists, behind the ears, the base of the throat, and the inside of elbows. These warm spots activate and project the fragrance throughout the day.
- Layering Tip: Layer Earthy Rose with Oud Whisper for a sumptuous rose-oud accord, or with Trinity Grove for a floral-woody amplification that extends the green, earthy facets.
- Seasonal Wear: Earthy Rose is eminently wearable and fairly versatile from season to season, though it's at its best in the cooler months and at night. Perfect for autumn evenings and winter occasions when you want sophistication with presence.
- Longevity Tip: Apply to moisturised skin for maximum longevity. The Fractionated Coconut Oil base adheres to hydrated skin significantly better than dry skin.
- Customise Your Scent: Add 1–2 drops of purelyBlack Patchouli essential oil to deepen the earthy base, or Geranium essential oil to amplify the green, herbal freshness that complements the rose's natural character.

How similar do your botanical impressions actually smell to the designer originals?
Our fragrances are engineered to be a 95–98% match to their designer inspirations. We use advanced Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) technology to analyze the molecular structure of the original perfume oils. While a trained nose might detect a subtle difference in the opening, the dry-down is virtually indistinguishable. -
Will people be able to tell I am wearing an alternative?
It is highly unlikely. The sillage and projection of our artisanal homages are designed to mirror the luxury versions perfectly. Unless someone is a professional perfumer analyzing the scent side-by-side, no one will know the difference. -
Why are your perfumes so affordable if the quality is the same?
When you buy a luxury brand, up to 80% of what you pay goes toward celebrity endorsements and marketing. We eliminate this 'Brand Tax.' We use the same high-quality ingredients but package them in minimalist bottles. You pay for the scent, not the logo. -
Do your botanical impressions last as long as the real thing?
Yes, and often longer. Many designer fragrances are sold as Eau de Toilette. We formulate our oil-based expressions as Eau de Parfum (EDP) or Extrait de Parfum, containing a higher concentration of fragrance oil (20–30%), ensuring the scent lasts for 6+ hours.
